An Enormous Eye: Writing Contemplatively Retreat

The reflective or contemplative essay is characterized by focused concentration, and because it was created out of contemplation, it tends to call the reader into contemplation. This retreat will provide participants time to read from a range of contemplative essays, looking for useful techniques and searching for personal "objects of contemplation." Participants will practice meditation and close observation. Writers of all levels are welcome. The goal of this retreat is to generate new material that can be workshopped during the time together, but participants are welcome to bring a work in progress, as well.  Facilitator is Tim Bascom, author of the memoir, "Chameleon Days: An American Boyhood in Ethiopia" and a collection of essays titled, "The Comfort Trap: Spiritual Dangers of a Convenience Culture." Fee: $200 includes presentations, lodging and meals. Commuter fee: $150 includes presentations and all meals except breakfast.
